Link4Growth’s journey to a Leaderless Organisation
By Chris Ogle on September 26th, 2018
When I mention that Link4Growth is a leaderless organisation this often brings a puzzled look to people’s faces. What does that mean? … is often the response.
Well it means that there isn’t the traditional hierarchical structure that you see in typical organisations… it isn’t a registered company, or a charity… there is no board of directors, and no reporting structure.
We all know organisations that operate this way even though we might not know it. Wikipedia is one, where people contribute to the platform because they want to, no one tells people what to do, or manages those doing things, it is a self policing community.
AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) is another… there are the 12 laws and a procedural practice but anyone can start a group anywhere in the world to help others that have suffered through alcoholism. This has expanded into addictions of other types such as drugs and gambling too.
Link4Growth now travels the same path. Link4Growth was set up to bring people together in informal, agenda-less gatherings where people have conversations. The premise upon which this is based is that everything starts with a conversation. If we are to create a different future we need to meet, talk, listen, learn, connect, share and inspire…
Like AA, Link4Growth has a set of guiding values or 7 Principles which underpin the organisation. These principles guide us towards being great human beings.
Link4Growth like the other Leaderless Organisations above, brings like minded people together who share a common set of goals and values that bond them together, and where money plays a small or insignificant part.
It seems like Link4Growth still has leaders though you might question; District Leaders… so with no leaders, what kind of leaders are these?
Link4Growth Leaders inspire other people to take responsibility and make conscious choices. Choices that work for the individual themselves… that might be sometimes to follow others, or even become a leader themselves in some capacity… or be creative and find their own way… Leaders don’t tell people what to do, leaders serve to inspire others to lead…
Having no organisational structure empowers anyone that wants to “Lead” to do so… and consequently Link4Growth is a decentralised “Leaderless” organisation which has no single point of failure.
Back at the end of 2015 Link4Growth was a limited company an old style organisation with a structure. However by the end of 2015 the decision was taken to become leaderless. It took a while to make this transition… May 1st 2017 the organisation officially became an Association and a leaderless status… and now at the end of September 2018… the organisation is beginning to feel much more like it is achieving its goals as people realise that the Association belongs to us the people and those that are inspired by its mission and principles.
Like nature itself we are diverse and unique, we all have a part to play. Developing a compassionate and kind world requires every experience and skill. Similar to nature where no one is in charge, the evolution to being Leaderless was a natural part of the Link4Growth journey.
If Tim Berners-Lee and those alongside him had decided to make money from accessing “Internet Content” it would have been stunted right at the start… It would have been fractured without the power of bringing the whole planet together, diluted by people trying to compete and sell their flavour of ‘the internet’.
Like the Internet itself, Link4Growth isn’t here to make profit… Link4Growth has no agenda other than offering “a solution” to unite people with a common purpose of compassion and kindness… and “we, the people, own it” … Now the gates are open… opportunities to expand ourselves abound.
Today Link4Growth provides a safe and secure place where people can grow, both online and offline. Where people can connect and be inspired to follow whatever path is right for them, and to meet others doing the same… all making choices about what they would like to do; become the best version of themselves, and great human beings… all contributing to society in whatever way works for them… whilst at the same time building their own supportive personal network… and… having a load of fun along the way.
